DuPont Offers Multiple Solutions for Material Handling

Engineering resins for many needs

The families of DuPont engineering thermoplastic resins can meet the needs for many kinds of injection molded parts or extruded profiles for conveyors and other material handling equipment.   They include:

Several typical applications underscore the benefits that can be obtained with parts molded from the resins listed above.

Conveyor chains

Link components molded from various DuPont engineering plastics are meeting needs for conveyor chains.  Such chains can operate quietly, lubricant-free and with little maintenance for long periods.

To extend the capabilities of plastics chains into applications involving higher tensile forces, speeds and operating temperatures, DuPont has collaborated with a leading conveyor manufacturer and engineering institute to develop and test a new link and chain design that reduces effective stress for a given level of tensile force compared with standard chain geometry. Tests involving several engineering polymers have shown excellent potential for highly loaded chains made from a long-fiber-reinforced grade of DuPont nylon.

Other conveyor parts

DuPont engineering plastics provide cost performance and cost benefits in a wide range of mechanical parts for conveyors. One of many commercial examples involves the air mechanism for a belt-driven roller conveyor. The conveyor uses a shoe injection molded from DuPont Delrin® acetal resin to push the moving belt up against the rollers. Seven other parts of the mechanism are also made of Delrin®, and it has an actuator diaphragm molded from DuPont Hytrel® thermoplastic elastomer.

The low wear and friction properties of Delrin® permit reliable service without lubrication.  The parts are precision-molded and assembled into a rattle-resistant assembly that operates at half the noise level of comparable conveyors.

Parts for extreme environments

DuPont Vespel® parts have a unique combination of properties that enable them to serve in conveyors and other types of material handling equipment operating in very demanding environments.

  • Resistance to very high temperatures
  • Low wear, even under aggressive PV conditions
  • Reduced friction
  • Resistance to aggressive chemicals
  • Light weight
  • Low thermal conductivity
  • Excellent dielectric properties
